Here are some top tips for taking good-quality eye photos of patients:
1. When possible, ask someone to assist you by holding the patient as still as possible to avoid movement
while taking the photo.
2. Open the patient’s eyelids gently with one hand.
3. Use the camera app with the flash turned on (most phones allow this on the default camera app but
occasionally you might need to download an extra app. Some options include: Camera+, ProCamera,
Macro, etc.).
4. It is very important to take the photos in the dark or at least in well dimmed consult room. Do not
take the images close to windows with natural outdoor light or outside of the hospital. If the owner is
providing the image, advise them to follow the same steps.
5. You could guide the focus point of the camera to the eye (this might vary between different phone
brands and apps).
6. Take more than one picture if necessary or a video in the same dark conditions but with the flash on
continuously. Discard the images which are out of focus.
7. To provide you with more detailed advice, when possible, take photos of both eyes so we can compare
the two and assess any variations.
8. Ideally the patient should be looking into the camera when you take the images so encourage them by
calling their name, offering a treat or using squeaky toys/objects.
9. Try and send us the images in the biggest “size” possible in terms of MB. If you compress the files, this
will affect the quality of the image.
